Former Australian captain Meg Lanning fired an unbeaten 90 from just 55 balls for Melbourne Stars against Perth Scorchers bowlers in match number eight of the 2025 WBBL season. Opening the innings alongside Rhys McKenna, the prolific right-hander clattered 10 fours and three huge sixes at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide as the Melbourne Stars mounted 173-4 in 20 overs.

It is worth noting that Meg Lanning’s fiery WBBL knock occurred just days after she was released by the Delhi Capitals Women franchise ahead of the upcoming WPL 2026 mega auction.

Former Australian cricketer and Melbourne Stars opener Meg Lanning made 90* from 55 balls to tonk her second successive half-century of the 2025 WBBL season. The 33-year-old also whacked a 41-ball 60 earlier this week against Adelaide Strikers at the Junction Oval in Melbourne.

With two fifties in two games, Meg Lanning is currently the leading run-getter this tournament, doing so at an average of 150 and at a staggering strike rate of 156.25.

Lanning’s newfound form after the release from the Delhi Capitals franchise now positions her as one of the headline attractions heading into the WPL 2026 mega auction.

It is worth noting that Australia’s multi-World Cup winner was released from the Delhi Capitals franchise earlier this month, even though she is the third leading run-getter in the history of the competition with 952 runs in 27 innings at an average of nearly 40.

Moreover, under the leadership of Meg Lanning, the Delhi Capitals franchise has finished at the top of the league stage in each of the three editions of the WPL so far, only to lose out to Mumbai Indians (twice) and RCB in the final.
