‘Eddington,’ ‘Freakier Friday,’ plus more new movies and TV shows to stream this weekend

New movies now available to stream
If seeing the teaser for “The Devil Wears Prada 2″ has you wishing it was the early 2000s again, don’t fear, because Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis have their own sequel hitting streaming that should delight aging millennials (this writer included). Back as the fan-favorite mother-daughter duo from 2003’s “Freaky Friday,” the stars once again bring the body-switching laughs in the follow-up “Freakier Friday,” now available on Disney+. Also back for the sequel: Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal, and yes, Chad Michael Murray. Available on Disney+
Filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard probably never imagined people watching movies over the internet as they sink into their couches, but he’s nonetheless the subject of “Nouvelle Vague,” streaming Friday on Netflix. Richard Linklater directs the new drama, which examines the making of Godard’s “Breathless,” with actor Guillaume Marbeck playing the cinema legend. “Shot entirely in black-and-white, with dialogue mostly in French, this enjoyable tribute to the art of moviemaking will play better for those who know something about the French New Wave,” writes Globe film critic Odie Henderson in his 3-star review. Available on Netflix

TV show now available to stream
TV hit-maker Taylor Sheridan may be preparing to leave Paramount for NBCUniversal soon, but the upcoming behind-the-scenes moves won’t impact the latest season of “Landman,” premiering Sunday on Paramount+. Co-created by Sheridan and Christian Wallace, the series stars Billy Bob Thornton as an oil executive in West Texas who must deal with the industry’s evolving landscape, as well as company pressures. The star-studded cast of “Landman” also includes Demi Moore, Andy Garcia, Sam Elliott, and Ali Larter. Season 2 premieres Sunday on Paramount+

Binge-worthy weekend TV pick
‘Squid Game: The Challenge’
Netflix juggernaut “Squid Game” may have ended with its third season earlier this year, but the streaming service has plenty of plans in motion to keep the franchise running. Turning fantasy into reality (TV), “Squid Game: The Challenge” returned for season 2 earlier this month, with a new crop of 456 contestants vying to win the $4.56 million grand prize. The show, which concludes its latest season on Nov. 18, also features several players from Massachusetts and New England. Available on Netflix
Joaquin Phoenix in “Eddington.”Richard Foreman
Ari Aster’s latest provocative big-screen outing, “Eddington,” arrives Friday on HBO Max. Bringing viewers back to the early days of the pandemic, the film tells the story of a small-town mayor (Pedro Pascal) in New Mexico who butts heads with the local sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix), an election rival running to replace him in a race that quickly turns violent. “Eddington” also stars Emma Stone, Austin Butler, and Pittsfield native Deirdre O’Connell. Available on HBO Max
