Describing Whitehall’s character in the upcoming thriller, the Radio Times called Adam a “charmingly unhinged nanny”.
Speaking to the publication about the inspiration behind Adam, Whitehall said: “Growing up on a diet of American movies from the 80s and 90s, it was always the British actor stealing the scenes as the villain.
“I was obsessed with Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood [Prince of Thieves]. Malice is a totally different genre, but there’s part of you that wants Adam to succeed in ruining this family, because they’re so garish and their life is so charming.
“It’s quite fun to see him messing with them, even if he does go a little bit over the top. You’re like, ‘You could have stopped at the mischievous high-jinks bit, you didn’t have to totally blow everything apart’.”

Meanwhile, speaking to Metro, Whitehall opened up about the “disturbing” thriller, saying he drew inspiration from Matt Damon’s character Tom Ripley in The Talented Mr Ripley.
Asked if he was inspired by Andrew Scott or Matt Damon’s take on that character, Whitehall said: “I guess probably in our version, it’s closer to the Matt Damon take on that character, where he presents a little bit more effervescence and charm, and then there’s a real kind of gear shift in that movie, and I think the same is true of this.
“We really do lull the audience in and then pull the rug… and I love those kinds of thrillers and this is very much one of those.”
Malice is streaming now on Prime Video.
