St. Vincent, Jeff Tweedy & Fleet Foxes Cover Holiday Classics for Oh. What. Fun. Soundtrack

Fleet Foxes, St. Vincent, Jeff Tweedy, Gwen Stefani, Sharon Van Etten, the bird and the bee and Weyes Blood are among the artists covering holiday favorites for the soundtrack to new Michael Showalter-directed film, Oh. What. Fun. The album arrives alongside the film’s debut on Wednesday, December 3rd via Sony Music Masterworks. Listen to Van Etten’s version of The Pretenders’ “2000 Miles” below.

The soundtrack also boasts Uwade, Empress Of’s Lorelay Rodriguez, and a collaboration between Andy Shauf and Madi Diaz. Rounding out the collection are contributions from the film’s cast, including a cover of “The 12 Days Of Christmas” by Dominic Sessa and more. See the full tracklisting below.

“I am usually very wary of doing covers, especially a ‘holiday’ song – but I connected with the depth of the lyrics and how our feelings around the holidays can be complicated,” Van Ettan said of her version of “2000 Miles.” “I tried to honor Chrissie Hynde’s version by collaborating with my band, The Attachment Theory. I hope if The Pretenders hear it, they feel our appreciation and love for Chrissie, the band and this song.”

According to Tweedy, “The Band pulled off the impossible. They wrote a Christmas song that’s joyful and appropriate for the occasion while being strange, emotional, and poetic,” referring to his contribution to the soundtrack, a cover of “Christmas Must Be Tonight.” “To me, this song gets at what this season is about, at its best: the light.”

St. Vincent added, “My favorite Christmas songs have an underlying sense of melancholy mixed in with the warmth of their familiarity. Sung by a person who is presumably alone, ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ is a prime example: ’Next year all our troubles will be out of sight’… the holiday season and its festivities are a temporary refuge, a reprieve after a shitty year. Hopefully the year to come will be better.”

Available on 140gm color vinyl and CD via Mutant, the physical copies feature exclusive artwork with liner notes by Michael Showalter. Pre-orders are ongoing.

According to a press release, Oh. What. Fun. stars Michelle Pfeiffer as Claire Clauster, “the glue that holds her chaotic, lovable family together every holiday season.” In a Kevin McCallister twist, the family accidentally leaves her behind on a special family outing that she planned. “Fed up and feeling underappreciated, she sets off on an impromptu adventure of her own. As her family scrambles to find her, Claire discovers the unexpected magic of a Christmas gone off-script.”

The film’s ensemble casts also features Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Denis Leary, Dominic Sessa, Danielle Brooks, Devery Jacobs, Havana Rose Liu, Maude Apatow, Jason Schwartzman, Eva Longoria and Joan Chen.
