Atlético Ottawa’s Kozlovskiy equalizes for Canada in U-17 World Cup knockouts

It’s been quite the week for Atlético Ottawa.
At the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, Canada were trailing 1-0 to the Republic of Ireland with just over five minutes to play in their round of 32 knockout tie. Atleti defender Sergei Kozlovskiy, who had entered in the 76th minute off the bench, played the hero for Canada.
The 17-year-old Montreal native hit a clean volley from the top of the penalty area and into the bottom corner, equalizing in the 85th minute.
This was Kozlovskiy’s first appearance of the tournament, after missing the entire group stage with injury.
Kozlovskiy would later score his penalty in the ensuing shootout, although Canada ultimately bowed out of the tournament as Ireland won in the 10th round of penalties.
Also involved in this match were a pair of other familiar faces to the CPL. York United’s Shola Jimoh started the game for Canada and played 62 minutes, while former Vancouver FC star — and recent league-record transfer to Club Brugge — Grady McDonnell played the entire match for Ireland, scoring his penalty.
