Tribute paid to council and Uisce Eireann teams for response to torrential rainfall in Offaly

TRIBUTES have been paid to staff members of Offaly County Council and Uisce Eireann for their quick response to flooding caused by torrential rainfall this week.
Leading the tributes at this Thursday’s meeting of Tullamore Municipal District, Cllr Declan Harvey highlighted flooding at a notorious blackspot in Callary St and said teams from both bodies had been on hand to deal with the situation.
“I’ve been the biggest critic of Uisce Eireann but last night (Wednesday) they did a great job,” said Cllr Harvey who noted that while floodwaters gathered in the area no sewage emerged from manholes as had been the situation in the past.
Paying tribute to Area Engineer, Joe Dooley, and the council’s outdoor team, Cllr Harvey said they had responded to weather situations in other aeras such as Ballycumber as well as Tullamore.
Cllr Aoife Masterson noted it had been a difficult 24/48 hours in Tullamore but observed “it could have been much worse”.
The Sinn Dein public representative said there had been a contentious relationship with Uisce Eireann in Tullamore in the past and she hoped they “get to the bottom’ of ongoing issues in the town.
Cllr Frank Moran said he received a number of calls about flooding issues and “it was unreal the way the outdoor staff responded.”
He said he received a phenomenal response to a call he made at 2.30am about weather related problems.
Cllr Sean O’Brien and Cllr Ollie Bryant also paid tribute to the work of the council’s staff.
