Essential Energy Launches Training Academy to Address Skilled Worker Shortage in Energy Transition
Electricity distributor Essential Energy has secured a waiver from the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) to establish a dedicated training academy in regional New South Wales. This initiative aims to address the increasing shortage of skilled workers necessary for Australia’s energy transition.
Upon reaching full operational capacity, the training academy is anticipated to offer accredited courses designed for individuals seeking careers in the energy sector. With the capacity to train up to 1,000 individuals each year, the academy will operate from various regionally-based hubs, reinforcing the commitment to skill development in areas outside metropolitan centers.
Essential Energy, which operates one of Australia’s largest electricity distribution networks covering approximately 95% of New South Wales, emphasizes the importance of this training initiative. Sarah McCullough, General Manager of Future Skills and Capability at Essential Energy, highlighted the academy’s role in creating opportunities for residents in regional communities, stating that it is open to people regardless of their prior experience, gender, or background. She remarked, “The training academy will create opportunities for people living in or looking to move to regional NSW communities … to build rewarding careers in the energy sector.”
The academy will utilize hands-on, industry-led training approaches conducted at regional hubs, reflecting a commitment to meet the evolving demands of the energy landscape while helping close the skills gap. Essential Energy is already recognized as an award-winning Registered Training Organisation and trains over 500 apprentices and trainees annually. Additionally, it has a current waiver allowing it to provide electrical safety training to community members.

The initiative aims to enhance inclusivity in the energy sector by increasing participation from women, First Nations people, and mature-aged students. To achieve these objectives, Essential Energy plans to form partnerships with industry and community organizations to create scholarship and funding opportunities for prospective students.
The Essential Energy Training Academy is set to launch its initial courses in July 2026 at its Orange education hub. A comprehensive curriculum is expected to be available by July 2027, coinciding with the opening of a purpose-built, state-of-the-art training facility in Tamworth.
With the financial backing of the AER waiver, Essential Energy will fund the academy’s operations through corporate borrowings and sponsorships, ensuring that there is no subsequent impact on electricity customer bills. This strategic move signifies a proactive approach to workforce development in the energy sector, crucial for navigating Australia’s transition to cleaner energy solutions.
