Montenegro’s President Milatović Urges Stronger European Engagement in the Balkans

Montenegro is evolving as a key player in the Balkans, with aspirations for European Union membership by 2028. Having started its EU accession talks in 2012, Montenegro stands out as a frontrunner among candidate countries.
Leadership of Jakov Milatović
Jakov Milatović, Montenegro’s current president, has taken a proactive stance on European integration. Elected in 2023, he is a pro-European reformer with a background in economics from Oxford University. Before his presidency, Milatović served as the minister of economic development.
EU Enlargement as a Key Issue
Milatović emphasizes the importance of EU enlargement for fostering stability and prosperity in Europe, stating, “The enlargement of the EU has always been an investment.” He warns that if Europe does not enhance its engagement in the Western Balkans, other powers may exploit the region, citing increasing cyber threats and disinformation.
Proposed EU Assistance
- Technical Assistance: Milatović calls for EU support to strengthen Montenegro’s institutions against hybrid threats.
- Media Literacy: He highlights the need for education focusing on media literacy for the youth.
- Social Cohesion: Promoting unity among citizens is also a priority for the president.
Montenegro’s EU Membership Progress
Milatović proudly outlines Montenegro’s achievements in its EU membership journey. The country has opened all negotiating chapters, a unique accomplishment among candidate nations. Additionally, Montenegro aligns its foreign and security policies with EU standards and is a NATO member, adding to its geopolitical stability.
Addressing Challenges
Despite its progress, Montenegro faces ongoing challenges. Organized crime poses a significant hurdle in the pursuit of EU accession. Milatović acknowledges the role of international partners, particularly France, Europol, and Interpol, in combating organized crime. He confirms that some individuals within Montenegro’s own systems have faced prosecution due to corruption and collusion with criminal organizations.
Milanović insists on a strict mandate from the public for zero tolerance towards organized crime and corruption, signaling a commitment to uphold law and order as Montenegro moves towards fulfilling its European aspirations.
