Edwin Díaz Predicted to Ditch Mets to Join NL Powerhouse

The Los Angeles Dodgers will attempt to be the fifth team to win three consecutive World Series in MLB history next season. Their aggressive pursuit of championships could continue this offseason.

Before the 2024 season, the Dodgers signed Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The team also traded for and extended Tyler Glasnow. After winning the World Series, the team signed Blake Snell, Tanner Scott and Rōki Sasaki. They have shown no signs of slowing down, and Sports Illustrated’s Will Laws and Nick Selbe predicted they would sign Edwin Díaz this offseason.

Díaz won his third Reliever of the Year Award for his efforts last season and may be a great fit for the Dodgers. He opted out of his five-year, $102 million deal and reportedly wants another $100 million deal on the open market. He also made it known that he is willing to leave the Mets to get paid.

The Dodgers signed Scott to be their closer last winter, but he failed to meet their expectations. He led the team in saves, but had a 4.74 ERA. He did not pitch in the postseason, and Rōki Sasaki ended up being the team’s primary closer. However, with Sasaki expected to be in play as a starter next season, Scott will need to step back in as the closer.

Adding Díaz would give the Dodgers one of the best closers in baseball, moving Scott to a setup role, where he could still make a major impact. He is a three-time All-Star and had a 1.63 ERA and 28 saves in 62 games last season.
