In a significant development, team India have dealt a heavy blow as skipper Shubman Gill has walked off the field after a freak injury early on in his innings in the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens. Notably, the right-handed batter suffered neck spasm, following which the 26-year-old returned to the pavilion.

The incident occurred in the 35th over of the match when Gill walked to bat after Washington Sundar’s wicket. Notably, Gill opened his arms on the third ball he faced and whacked Simon Harmer for four down the leg-side. As soon as Gill returned to his stance, he felt pain in his neck and called for the physios immediately.

The India skipper was in discomfort and the physio advised him to return to the pavilion for further assessment. At the time of writing this article, there is no update on when will Shubman return to bat, but Rishabh Pant has replaced him in the middle, marking his return to the Indian team after a long injury set-back.
