DWP could strip four gateway benefits from people with PIP next year
The Departmeet for Work and Pensions could make a big change to gateway benefits for people on Personal Independent Payment, or PIP. Speaking in Parliament during an oral session this week, the DWP was asked to “consider the benefits”.
The DWP was urged to consider four perks “to which PIP is a gateway, such as Motability, disability premiums, Council Tax discounts and Blue Badges”. Labour Party MP Sir Stephen Timms, who is conducting a review of welfare spending, was also urged to “promise at least that those entitlements could come down”.
He said: “We have made it clear that we will co-produce our review of the PIP assessment with disabled people and representatives of disability organisations.

“The review will cover the assessment for the mobility component, which leads on to the Motability scheme, and other entitlements to which PIP is a gateway.”
If you get PIP you may be entitled to extra money on top of your existing benefits, a reduction in your council tax or road tax bills and discounts on travel.
You’ll need your PIP award letter before you can apply for this extra help. This award letter is sometimes called a PIP award notice. It’s sent to you when the DWP has made a decision on your PIP claim.
Citizens Advice explained: “Contact the office in charge of your benefits, tell them you’re getting PIP and ask them what other help this entitles you to. You may need to send them a copy of your PIP award letter.”
In its advice online for benefits claimants, it added: “They can also tell you how much extra you’ll get.
“Getting a disability premium will not reduce your PIP or any of your other benefits so it’s always best to ask the DWP what extra you’re entitled to and apply for it.”
