It’s time for Basketball: Spurs vs Golden State Warriors (NBA Cup)

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.
Playing basketball in the NBA consists of three distinct stages. There’s offense, defense, and working the refs. The Spurs are a work in progress on the offensive side, with players in various stages of development, and a human cheat code in Wembanyama who can rise up and score whenever he team really needs a bucket. The Silver and Black’s defense borders on the elite, and except for occasional lapses in guarding players on the perimeter, they are among the best in the league. The facet of the game where they have to most to learn is in the foul-drawing game, a game that the veteran players of the Golden State Warriors are quite proficient at. Draymond Green is the league’s leader at bending perceptions to favor his team, even challenging an obviously correct call and using that to bend the game into his favor. I don’t know how referees keep falling for Draymond’s foolishness, but it’s very effective. It’s a skill that certain veterans like Curry, Butler, and Green have perfected over the years, and I’m convinced that Steve Kerr also teaches it as part of his coaching duties. All of those players have great basketball skills, but they’ve also mastered the craft of drawing fouls, which is a big part of winning in the NBA.

The Spurs are a young team, and they have a ways to go in that arena. It takes a while to develop the skill, but Wednesday night’s game was a good object lesson for the inexperienced San Antonio squad. You need to make sure that the referees are aware when you get fouled and let them know when they miss calls. Manu Ginobili might be able to teach the newbies some tricks of the trade.
Tonight’s game is an NBA Cup game, and the Spur can take control of their group stage with a win tonight. They will have two more cup games after tonight, the Blazers on Wednesday the 26th and the Nuggets on Friday the 28th. Advancing past the group stage could be a real confidence builder for a Spurs team that’s looking for their first playoff berth in several years.
[NOTE: I apologize for the extremely salty nature of this game preview.]
Game Prediction:
Draymond Green will commit six technical fouls and get called for one.
