Visible reminder to spark mental health conversations in Maitland

A colourful initiative is set to spark open and meaningful conversations about mental health in the Lower Hunter.
The Blue Tree Project, a charity that kicked off in 2019 after the tragic loss of Jayden Whyte – a much-loved son, brother and friend – to suicide, transforms dead plants into vivid symbols to serve as a visible reminder that it’s okay not to be okay.
And, it made its striking local debut along the New England Highway at East Maitland this week.
While it began as a grassroots program, the Blue Tree Project has since grown into a widely-recognised and impactful global entity, as it hopes to positively transform attitudes towards mental health.
Mayor Philip Penfold said Maitland City Council was proud to back such a vital undertaking.
“Mental health is a shared concern in our community,” he said.
“According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures, one-in-five Australians aged 16 to 85 experienced a mental disorder in the past 12 months.
“So, this highlights the importance of support networks and open conversation.
“In regional areas like ours, support isn’t always easy to access, but we want people to know they’re not alone.
“The blue tree signifies that help is available and taking that first step to ask is the start of real change.”
Owen Boughton, Maitland City mayor Philip Penfold and councillors Bill Hackney and Sally Halliday.
Programmed Property Services business development manager Owen Boughton echoed those sentiments.
“The Blue Tree Project is a meaningful initiative addressing an issue that impacts us all,” he said.
“So, we hope this simple gesture encourages understanding and open conversations around mental health in our community.”
The message of connection will continue later this month when council hosts a free community event at Maitland Town Hall on Wednesday 19 November in partnership with Joblink Plus, to mark International Men’s Day.
