Kelvin Fletcher and his wife Liz have given viewers a glimpse into the reality of life on the farm with the latest episode of their reality show. The actor, 41, previously played farmer Andy Sugden on Emmerdale but has since turned his hand to real-life agriculture since quitting the ITV soap nearly a decade ago and the couple document their lives on their 120-acre Cheshire property.
In the new episode of Fletchers’ Family Farm, Kelvin, who has been married to Liz Marsland since 2015 and has Marnie, seven, Milo, four, and 23-month-old twins Maximus and Mateusz, dealt with the not-so-glamorous task of collecting samples for the vet, and while the ewes co-operated, the lambs did not.
In the end, Kelvin phoned the vet for advice on what to to in such a grim situation. The vet explained: “Glove on, it’s just one finger in, but if there’s nothing there, it can be difficult, you need a smaller hand.” To his horror, the former Strictly Come Dancing star began doing as the vet instructed but was left with no other option but to enlist the help of his wife.

As she clambered over the fence to take on the task, Liz said: “You just make sure it doesn’t kick! Oh, God. There’s no poo there. You can’t just have a root round, that’s not nice. Do you want me to stick a finger up your bum?!”
There was another dramatic moment when Kelvin realised that a set of twin lambs had been struggling to latch on to their mum. Kelvin noted that a lack of milk coming from the mother was a sign of mastitis.
A course of antibiotics was needed ‘straight away,’ and was expected to clear the whole thing up but in the mean time, until the swelling had gone down and the infection has been cleared, the lambs had to . “Liz made up a bottle as if doing it for baby, explaining that it was basically the same sort of practice as when she’d used formula for their children.
But a more heart-warming moment came around when Kelvin explained to viewers that their children are now getting to the age when they can understand more, and they set about feeding the bottle to the lambs themselves.
He explained: “They just instinctively take on a parental role. They’re babies themselves but they see themselves as protectors of this little lamb, it’s a beautiful quality.”
Kelvin also explained how his children have started to care for the animals as well(Image: LIONSGATE)
Earlier this year, they suffered a devastating time when there was a fire at their property, resulting in them having to temporarily leave their home. Appearing on Thursday’s instalment of Lorraine, the duo told the ITV star what they’ve been up to since the fire.
Liz commented: “You’ve just got to keep carrying on and we have done! We’ve expanded on the cows, we’ve expanded on the sheep.
“We’ve had a bit of romance at the farm. We’ve had our very first wedding, which was beautiful and there’s so much more to come.”
Cutting in, Kelvin revealed that there should be some new arrivals at the farm next Spring, as it’s currently mating season.
He added: “Speaking of sheep, this is now mating season as you mentioned before. I have to be clear, that’s not me and Liz! That is for the sheep.
“We’re getting the tup ready because we’re already looking ahead to springtime when we will be expecting some lambs. So, the important time now is with our male sheep and getting them ready to go out there and meet the females.”
Fletchers’ Family Farm is on ITV at 11.30am on Sundays.
