Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan has slammed the Eden Gardens track, calling it ‘awful’, as 26 wickets fell in two days and the first Test between India and South Africa is rushing towards a three-day finish.

Star India allrounder Ravindra Jadeja grabbed four wickets as he demolished the Protea top and middle-order to leave the visitors reeling at 93/7 in their second innings at stumps on day two of the first Test in Kolkata on Saturday, November 15.

Earlier, pacer Marco Jansen and off-spinner Simon Harmer took seven wickets between them as South Africa skittled India for a paltry 189 in the first innings.

“Awful pitch in Kolkata … #INDvSA,” Vaughan tweeted on Saturday afternoon.

“This pitch will be dangerous for righty batters because of the angle and cracks, but lefties can play better because on their side, there are no cracks,” former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble had said on commentary earlier in the day.

The likes of Dhruv Jurel, Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder were some of these right-handers who fell prey to the spin of Jadeja and Harmer.

“I am all for a pitch favouring the bowler, but this Kolkata pitch is an absolute shocker,” a user tweeted.

“This might be the worst pitch in India since that Ahmedabad one Vs England. Every second ball is jumping or shooting,” another user tweeted.

If Harmer’s classical off-spin had brought South Africa back into the contest earlier in the day, Jadeja was always going to be a resident menace on a crumbling pitch with his immaculate length and ability to attack the stumps.
