Liechtenstein vs Wales preview

Wales may still fall short in their efforts to qualify automatically for the 2026 World Cup, but they have plenty left to play for and can return to winning ways with a big win over Group J minnows Liechtenstein in Vaduz.

Thanks to a strong performance in the 2024 Nations League, Wales are guaranteed a place in the World Cup qualification playoffs.

However, Craig Bellamy’s side would benefit from finishing second in their qualifying group because it would ensure home advantage in their playoff semi-final.

Belgium’s coronation as Group J winners seems inevitable but Wales are vying for second place with North Macedonia, who head to the Cardiff City Stadium next Tuesday.

North Macedonia are three points above Wales and have the added advantage of a superior goal difference  of plus nine as opposed to plus three. But Wales are preparing for their game in hand against Liechtenstein knowing that a victory margin of six goals or more would see them move above the North Macedonians and make their task on matchday eight all about avoiding defeat rather than needing to win.

Winning by six goals seems like a daunting task, but Wales are not without a realistic chance given the standard of opposition.

There are several international teams adorned with the minnows tag but few of them live up to the moniker as well as Liechtenstein, who sit 206th on the Fifa rankings.

The Blue-Reds have gone 39 competitive games without registering a victory and are approaching the Wales game on a ten-game losing sequence which started with losses away to Malta and at home to San Marino in October last year.

Liechtenstein’s standard approach is to defend deep and try to limit the damage, but they have shipped 23 goals in six World Cup qualifiers and suffered a 5-0 loss away to North Macedonia and a 4-0 defeat in Kazakhstan in their most recent Group J fixtures.

Wales make the trip with less firepower due to the absence of injured centre-forward Kieffer Moore.

However, they will give it their best shot to run up a big score and should do enough to win by at least four and cover a three-goal handicap.

Neco can show his creative side

Wales will be looking to gain overloads in the wide areas and there should be opportunities for full back Neco Williams to go on the attack. Williams popped up with two assists during Wales’s 2024 Nations League campaign and he can lay on at least one goal against Liechtenstein.

High-tempo Wales can rout their hosts

Liechtenstein have conceded an average of five goals over their last three qualifying games so there are solid grounds to anticipate a convincing Welsh victory. Wales have got used to playing at a higher tempo during Craig Bellamy’s tenure and that may help them as they go in search of a wide-margin success.

Joe Rodon to score any time

Wales are sure to win a lot of corners and free-kicks and their attacking set-pieces should be of great interest to centre-back Joe Rodon, who has netted two goals since the start of qualifying.

Sorba Thomas to score or assist

Thomas has delivered five assists over the course of the campaign and could have his say this weekend.

Over three Wales goals

Wales settled for a 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture but they are aiming for a goal glut in the Alps and should prevail by at least four goals.
