The Wildcats, who played Ohio State at Wrigley Field last season, will now see the other half of “The Game” in 2025, as Michigan looks to keep its twinkling playoff hopes alive.
Northwestern (5-4, 3-3 Big Ten) is hoping its bye week has it prepared after back-to-back losses against Nebraska and USC following a four-game winning streak. Michigan (7-2, 5-1) has three straight wins since dropping its second game of the year against USC at the LA Memorial Coliseum.
#18 Michigan vs. Northwestern: The matchup
The Wolverines are perhaps gearing up for a spoiler role or even a College Football Playoff run with a 7-2 overall record and a 5-1 mark in Big Ten play with three games remaining. The last of those comes in Ann Arbor against their top-ranked rival Ohio State Buckeyes in a matchup that could boost Michigan’s playoff chances. That assumes the Wolverines can take care of business this weekend in Chicago and next week at Maryland, both of which should feature Michigan as a sound favorite. The team has won three straight and six of its past seven, most recently eking out a 21-16 win over Purdue prior to its final bye last weekend.
Michigan, ranked No. 18 in The Associated Press poll, enters the matchup 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten. Most recently, Michigan beat Purdue 21-16 on Nov. 1. Facing Purdue, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood went 13-for-22 with 145 passing yards and one interception.
Northwestern comes into the contest 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten. On Nov. 7, Southern California defeated Northwestern 38-17. Against USC, Northwestern quarterback Preston Stone went 20-for-30 with 150 passing yards and one passing touchdown.
Entering Saturday, Michigan leads the all-time series 60-15-2 vs. Northwestern. This is the first meeting between the programs at Wrigley Field.

Michigan enters the matchup at 7-2, riding a rushing attack that averages 223.8 yards per game, good for 12th in the FBS. The Wolverines’ defense has been equally impressive, surrendering just 17.2 points per contest, the 13th-best mark nationally. Northwestern, sitting at 5-4, has struggled offensively, ranking 108th in the nation with 21.9 points per game.
