The major surprise on Saturday morning for the Spanish national team came when the squad numbers for this afternoon’s World Cup qualifier against Georgia in Tbilisi were released. Notably absent from the list were Samu, De Frutos — and also Dean Huijsen.
The Real Madrid centre-back had been expected to start the match. Since making his debut, he has featured in every game except for the previous call-up, when he was left out due to a muscle issue.
At the time, the RFEF simply published the squad numbers without offering any explanation for Huijsen’s unexpected omission.
Hours later, El Partidazo de Cope reported that the defender “has been ruled out of today’s match because he experienced muscle discomfort at the end of yesterday’s training session.”
The outlet added that “he underwent tests this morning to determine whether he will remain with the squad or leave the training camp.”
