England 33-19 New Zealand: Autumn Nations Series player ratings

England

Freddie Steward
Supreme up and under early on, his aerial work was clearly causing New Zealand problems before head injury ended his involvement after 22 minutes. 6

Tom Roebuck
Big tackle on Fainga’anuku forced early turnover and repeatedly demonstrated his talents in the air. Deserved his try for his endeavour. 8

Ollie Lawrence
Produced a strong finish just when England needed to get on the scoreboard. Big turnover to boot. Seems astonishing he was left out against Australia. 8

Fraser Dingwall
Lovely dummy and inside pass to Underhill and capped best performance of autumn to date with a fine try. Partnership with Lawrence is flourishing. 8

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso
England were able to get him in plenty of space but struggled to capitalise. Ends match with plenty of metres made but should he be finishing more of these (half) chances? 7

George Ford
Masterly. Caused havoc with a spiral bomb, crisp drop goals were crucial and struck a sublime 50:22 too. England’s indisputable on-field general. Catharsis writ large. 10

Alex Mitchell
Brought control from scrum-half and his kicking was generally on the money. Formed a fine half-back partnership with the irrepressible Ford. 8

Fin Baxter
Guilty of getting in Mitchell’s way at one point but he continues his development on the international stage. 7

Jamie George
Lost three lineout throws in first half alone and lasted just four minutes after break. Scrambled well to deny Savea and adds a calming influence. 6

Joe Heyes
Got the better of Williams in one scrum and made sure his opponent knew about it with a ferocious celebration. Growing into the jersey. 6

Maro Itoje (capt)
England had their fair share of lineout problems on both sides of the ball but as he often does, Itoje found an extra gear in the final 20 minutes. 7

Alex Coles
Guilty of a poor knock-on in the first half but he is enjoying himself in this side and a good thing too given England’s lack of depth in the second-row. 6

Guy Pepper
In the wars and conceded one silly penalty but he looks at home on the international stage and emptied the tank before making way for Pollock. 7

Sam Underhill
Smashed into Lakai inside two minutes but couldn’t get offload away to Lawrence – Underhill in microcosm – but no stopping him from close range. Always shows up in big games. 8

Ben Earl
Was having a blinder, making countless carries, leading the counter-rucking charge and typically all action until his yellow card. Has come back from the Lions a better player. 9

Luke Cowan-Dickie (for George 44) Also endured lineout problems 6; Ellis Genge (for Baxter 56) Upped the intensity 7; Will Stuart (for Heyes 56) Rock solid 7; Chandler Cunningham-South (for Lawrence 79) N/A; Tom Curry (for Underhill 56) Action man for 24 minutes 7; Henry Pollock (for Pepper 56) A nuisance in the best possible way 8; Ben Spencer (for Mitchell 73) N/A; Marcus Smith (for Steward 22) Showed up well for nearly an hour 7.

New Zealand

Will Jordan
Really should have passed to Leroy Carter, but the All Blacks were over soon enough. Has a remarkable try-scoring record and was on hand to cruise over again. 7

Leroy Carter
A torrid time. Bumped too easily by Lawrence for England’s opening try and coughed up an ugly knock-on. Will surely come under pressure for his place on this evidence. 4

Billy Proctor
Pretty anonymous until a fine kick ahead led to Jordan’s try. Centre was an area you wondered if New Zealand would have the edge, but Proctor was outshone out by Lawrence. 6

Quinn Tupaea
Runs hard and straight, but New Zealand miss the poise of Jordie Barrett at inside-centre. Could not quite hang on to Beauden Barrett’s crossfield kick. 5

Leicester Fainga’anuku
Twickenham is his middle name and he opened the scoring with a powerful finish. Guilty of coughing up possession too often. 6

Beauden Barrett
Sumptuous long passes to get outside England’s defence, but missed touch terribly. Was hampered by injury and gave up kicking duties. 7

Cam Roigard
Classy 50:22 after Ford had kicked restart out on the full. Does plenty of things well, a few not so well and was another to miss touch with a penalty. 6

Ethan de Groot
Honours pretty even at scrum-time, but struggled to make much of an impact with ball in hand and was replaced at half-time. 5

Codie Taylor
Led the haka and took try with a calmness that comes with all his experience. Costly yellow card at start of second half. 6

Fletcher Newell
Put himself about with 10 first-half tackles, but scrum began to wobble before he was replaced. Little impact in the loose. 6

Scott Barrett (capt)
Beat Coles to lineout – an area where New Zealand enjoyed first-half dominance – but could do little to stop England seizing the initiative. 6

Josh Lord
Late call-up to replace the ill Fabian Holland, but showed no signs of rustiness. Stole an early lineout and flew into his tackles. 8

Simon Parker
Does not shirk the challenge, but part of a back-row that came off second best and he was sacrificed when New Zealand needed a hooker after Taylor’s yellow. 6

Ardie Savea
Big turnover after Feyi-Waboso made ground down left early on, but did not affect things in his usual manner thereafter. Extremely quiet by his lofty standards. 5

Peter Lakai
Saw plenty of the ball, but was not able to do a great deal with it. Does not have the footwork and therefore ability to make ground Earl does. 6

Replacements: Samisoni Taukei’aho (for Taylor 66) Little impact 5; Tamaiti Williams (for De Groot ht) Scrum got worse when he was on 5; Pasilio Tosi (for Newell 60) Got stuck in 6; Sam Darry (for Lord 66) Not up to speed 5; Wallace Sititi (for Parker 55) Couldn’t influence proceedings 5; Cortez Ratima (for Roigard 45) Not as imposing as Roigard 5; Anton Lienert-Brown (for Tupaea 57) Gave away silly penalty 5; Damian McKenzie (for B Barrett 55) Should have started 7.
