Eubank Jr vs Benn 2 fight preview
Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn served up a British classic in April in the resumption of a boxing family rivalry stretching back decades.
After 12 rounds, Eubank was the man with his hand raised as all three judges scored the fight 116-112 in his favour.
The two meet again on this evening in what may well be the final instalment of the Eubank versus Benn rivalry. The score reads 2-0 to the Eubanks, after Chris Eubank Sr claimed a win over Nigel Benn back in 1990 the two battled to a draw three years later.
Victory for Eubank would probably end any chance, and desire, for a third fight, while a defeat would potentially leave the 36-year-old with a decision to make regarding whether or not he continues his career.
For Benn’s part, he has indicated he plans to try to fulfil his world title ambitions at 147lbs regardless of the result.
Tonight’s showdown at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium therefore could be the last dance in the Eubank vs Benn saga, and if it is even half as good as April’s meeting we should be in for another thriller.
Eubank goes into the fight as a slight favourite at a general 8-11 – a bigger price than he was for the first fight. Benn is a best-priced 11-8 and has shortened over the course of the week.
Why Conor Benn can win
After defeat in the first fight, there are more options available to Benn in terms of altering his gameplan – but he probably doesn’t need to change much.
Before April’s showdown there were concerns over whether Benn, as a natural welterweight, could handle Eubank’s power and if he in turn could hurt the bigger man.
Those fears proved to be unfounded and it was probably Benn who came the closest to forcing a stoppage, rocking his rival in the eighth round.
Those moments weren’t enough, however, as Eubank threw and landed more punches in every round. It is now clear Benn can’t outbox Eubank, who alongside his size advantages is also the technically superior fighter, but there is still a clear route to victory for the 29-year-old.
Benn needs to remain explosive but he also has to be more measured with his approach, and avoid getting caught in too many moments where he stands and trades.
The key for the Destroyer is movement. Benn’s advantage lies in his speed and being the fresher, more agile fighter. Time is no longer on Eubank’s side and if Benn boxes on the backfoot and keeps his opponent moving he has a good chance of avenging the one defeat on his record.
Why Chris Eubank Jr can win
Eubank doesn’t need to make too many changes after winning the first fight.
He has reunited with Brian McIntyre for the rematch after Bomac oversaw his win over Liam Smith, so there may be some small adjustments even if a ‘same-again’ approach would potentially result in another win.
Eubank knows he’s got the measure of Benn in terms of technical nous and ability so he will probably look to control the distance a little better with his size and jab in the rematch.
His big shot has always been his uppercut, and engineering opportunities to unleash his most devastating weapon will be a priority.
The verdict
The first fight went the full distance but the judges may not be required tonight.
Both men were hurt in April and there were various points where it looked as if a knockout was close. Benn and his team, in particular, will probably feel they need a stoppage to level the score, so the general 10-11 on an early finish for either man looks a strong play.
Ultimately, Eubank’s size and superior skillset are huge advantages and this time he can end any room for doubt.
Benn will look to move and be explosive, but that will leave him open to counters and Eubank has the accuracy and power to make the most of his chances and claim the 26th stoppage win of his career.
