Carbondale Shooting: What We Know About Reports Of Multiple Officers Shot In Osage County, Kansas

A major law enforcement response is underway in Osage County, Kansas, after reports emerged Saturday morning of a shooting incident near Carbondale that may have left multiple officers injured. Authorities from at least four agencies have converged north of Carbondale, closing off the 11200 block of South Topeka Avenue, according to early information from the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).

KHP spokeswoman April McCollum confirmed that the agency is “responding to a developing situation” but declined to provide further details, citing operational security. The Topeka Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, and other regional law enforcement agencies have joined the response, with a large perimeter established as tactical teams and medics moved in around mid-morning.

A Facebook post from a local resident travelling through the area described “a horrible scene” with “officers shot” and ambulances rushing to hospitals. “Cops and ambulances are coming from every direction,” the user wrote. “I turned around and went back to Carbondale to get on the highway. I had to pull over. Keep them all in your prayers.”

Multiple Agencies Coordinate As Situation Unfolds

The situation remains fluid, with reports of active emergency radio traffic suggesting law enforcement casualties. Witnesses in the area have described seeing helicopters circling overhead and roadblocks preventing access to nearby properties. As of 11:30 a.m., the KHP and local fire and EMS units were still on scene, though it remains unclear whether the threat has been neutralised.

Authorities Urge Public to Avoid Area

Residents of Carbondale and nearby communities have been urged to avoid the area as authorities work to secure the scene. Law enforcement officials have not yet confirmed the total number of victims or whether a suspect is in custody. “This is an evolving and very active situation,” a Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said. “We ask everyone to remain patient and stay clear of the perimeter.”

As of Saturday afternoon, no official statement has been released regarding the condition of the reported injured officers. Kansas State Police and local media have promised updates once the situation stabilises.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
