Islam Makhachev is one of the biggest stars in UFC and while fans are enamored by his skill in the Octagon, his personal life has been under the microscope.
The 34-year-old is the No. 2-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in UFC, behind Ilia Topuria, and is the No. 1-ranked lightweight. As Makhachev continues his rise in UFC, fans have started to ponder what the star’s life was like outside of MMA and what his personal life might look like.
However, there is little information available on Makhachev’s personal life. That said, it has been reported in the past that the UFC star is married, though there is very little out in the open about the ceremony and his wife.
Though information is limited regarding Makhachev’s wedding, it has been reported that the ceremony took place in April 2021 in the Republic of Dagestan’s capital Makhachkala. It is said to have taken place at an unnamed hotel in the city, with some of the biggest names in the sport attending.
Khabib Nurmagomedov was among those who were present for the festivities, along with Zubaira Tukhugov and Shamil Zavurov. Interestingly, very little is known about his wife and his children, as Makhachev opts to keep his personal life close to his chest.
There are very few photos of Makhachev with his wife on their wedding day. On that particular day, his wife was spotted very briefly, clutching the UFC star’s arm as they made their way through the crowd.
There have been times when Makhachev has been open to sharing bits and pieces of his personal life with fans and his fellow UFC competitors. Speaking with UFC legend Demetrious Johnson, Makhachev shared that he had children and that he often would lose sleep.
“I have kids like they’re all small, you know, they wake up five in the morning, four in the morning,” he told Johnson. “Yeah, it’s bothering me, but I still sleep with my kids always because I miss them because I travel a lot, you know. But my opinion, when you’re in camp, you just have to focus and sleep well. It’s most important thing for recovery.”
When pressed by Johnson about his children, Makhachev revealed that he has three children: One girl and two boys. And though he is frequently traveling as a result of his profession, the star does what he can to be there for them when he is able.
During a press conference, the star was asked how he had managed to balance preparing for his fights with tending to his growing family. However, he gave a candid answer in attempting to do both, especially as he continues to fight in the United States and his family is in Russia.
“It’s normal,” he told reporters of attempting to balance his life with work. “I have three kids. I don’t see them much.”
