Grand Slam of Darts semi-final preview

Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price meet in a heavyweight Grand Slam semi-final showdown on Sunday and Cool Hand can freeze out the Iceman.

Humphries cruised through the group stage winning all three matches in a section which contained Michael Smith, Nathan Aspinall and Alex Spellmen.

The former world champion destroyed Jurjen van der Velde 10-3 at the last-16 stage, and while a dominant success over the young Dutchman was expected, the standard of Humphries’ performance was impressive given he has been plagued with back and neck issues.

The Newbury arrowsmith averaged 108.55 in the destructive victory over Van der Velde and that high-level effort was followed by numbers of 104.98 in the 16-8 quarter-final win over Smith.

Humphries appears to be at the peak of his powers and there is plenty of time to get on top in a best-of-31-leg semi-final shootout.

The 2023 Grand Slam champ hit nine 180s, while giving up only leg on his throw against Bully Boy and a similar standard of performance should get Humphries home against Price.

The Iceman can match Humphries if he hits his best form, but knockout-stage averages of 99.42 and 96.71 suggest the Markham man could come up short.

Cool Hand has shown poise, consistency and control throughout this tournament and the 30-year-old rates a handicap play on his way to the final.

Luke Littler downed quarter-final opponent Josh Rock 16-12 with a 105.18 average and the Nuke is two matches away from a second Grand Slam title.

The world champion produced some blistering darts to turn the last-eight showdown in his favour, but Littler had to come from 9-6 down in that contest.

It’s pretty certain that the Nuke will deliver a high-level of performance on the Grand Slam stage and the question is can Danny Noppert be good enough for long enough to challenge the Warrington arrowsmith?

At 6-1 it could be worth taking a chance on the answer being yes.

Noppert will need to hold it together on doubles, but the Freeze hit ten 180s and 12 140s in a 16-8 quarter-final success over Lukas Wenig and the Dutchman has the scoring power to create leg-winning opportunities.

The former UK Open king has averaged 100.38, 98.66, 98.34 and 97.61 in his last four Grand Slam matches and there is enough in those numbers to think the 34-year-old is slightly overpriced.
