NFL ref Shawn Smith calls penalty in Spanish during Dolphins-Commanders Madrid game

Ryan Tannehill on Aggies, Miami Dolphins game vs Commanders in Spain

Not only is the NFL international, but it’s bilingual, as well.

The Washington Commanders and Miami Dolphins kicked off in Madrid on Sunday morning, the first-ever international game in Spain. Taking place in Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, home of Real Madrid F.C., there’s a certain level of Spanish flavor added to the matchup.

That was only accentuated by referee Shawn Smith, who took an opportunity to make a false start call in Spanish in the first quarter of the matchup.

While Smith seemed to give up on the second half of the call, he still gets an A for effort on making Spanish-speaking fans feel at home.

Of course, Smith’s call conjures memories of referee Shawn Hochuli, who made a call in German during the 2024 Munich matchup between the Giants and Panthers.

Whatever the language, the call was an impactful one, as it pushed the Commanders back and forced them to kick a field goal instead of attempting a fourth-down try at the end zone.

Kicker Matt Gay would put a little English on the ball to tie up the game.
