A major fire destroyed a commercial warehouse containing ten trucks and caused millions of euro in damage at a premises in Little Island on Sunday evening, November 16.

The commercial warehouse is located in the Ballytrasna area of Little Island, where there are several industrial premises.

The fire is believed to have occurred around 11pm on Sunday, November 16 and the flames were visible across Cork Harbour.

Fire crews from Cork City Fire Brigade battled the blaze late into the night.

They were assisted by crews from fire services across Cork which included Cobh, Midleton, Mallow, Carrigaline and Bandon.

Victor Shine, second officer with Cork City Fire Brigade, said the majority of the warehouse had already been destroyed when crews arrived. “We got great help from a number of fire services who supplied pumps, crews, tankers and platforms. The first call was around 11.03pm. That is when we were notified. People are saying they heard things before that, but when our gang got there it was through the roof. It is a commercial warehouse.”

“Everything inside is gone,” said Mr Shine. “There were ten trucks inside with artics and rigids, thousands of litres of fuel and all the stock. The building is a write-off. There will be a good look now at the causes of it. It looks structurally okay from the outside, but there is no roof or anything on it.

“Everything is after collapsing in. The rest of the buildings nearby are all fine and functioning. It was one premises. We had to contain and keep it inside the walls of that building. Our crews came away at around 2.30pm. It was under control at that stage,” he added.

Personnel from Cork City Fire Brigade are still present at the scene in Little Island today said Mr Shine. “There is still a bit of damping down. There is still a crew there with a water tank just damping down around the area. One person suffered minor injuries due to the smoke. He was sorted straight away.”
