Monday’s World Cup qualifying predictions

There could be a tense atmosphere at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig on Monday when Germany and Slovakia – both on 12 points after five games – face off in their final Group A encounter.

Die Mannschaft top the section as their goal difference is three better than Slovakia’s, but the fact the four-time world champions could still drop down to second perhaps shows they are not at the levels they once were and they will be wary of the visitors after they lost September’s reverse fixture 2-0.

Still, avoiding defeat would secure Germany’s place at the finals and this could make for a defensive approach from the hosts, who have recorded three consecutive victories to nil heading into this contest.

Slovakia have also been solid at the back, conceding just twice in qualifying, but they have struggled for goals, scoring just six times, and their attacking deficiencies could see them have to settle for a playoff place.

With all five of Slovakia’s qualifiers featuring under 2.5 goals and four of Germany’s last six assignments producing less than three strikes, another low-scoring match could be on the cards.

Van de Ven can punish fragile Lithuania

Unless a fanciful set of circumstances unfolds, the Netherlands’ place at the World Cup will be confirmed following the final Group G matches on Monday.

The Oranje are three points clear of second-placed Poland, who are 13 goals worse off than the section leaders, and Ronald Koeman’s side host rock-bottom Lithuania in their last qualifying fixture.

A comfortable home victory is expected and it could be worth keeping an eye on Netherlands defender Micky van de Ven to get on the scoresheet against a Lithuania defence with just one clean sheet in their last six games.

The 24-year-old has found the back of the net six times for Tottenham this season, most recently scoring in the Champions League win over Copenhagen, and he offers good value to add to his tally.
