Bruins place former first-round pick on waivers

BOSTON — As Marco Sturm alluded earlier in the day, the Bruins made a roster move involving Johnny Beecher on Monday afternoon.

The Bruins put their fourth-line winger on waivers, with the hope of sending him to Providence.

On a one-year deal with an average annual value of just $900,000, some team might be tempted to take a flyer on him as a bottom-six forward and a penalty killer. Teams have until 2 p.m. on Tuesday to claim him. If nobody does, the Bruins can send him to the AHL.

Waiving Beecher gives Boston a roster spot if they want to call up a defenseman after Charlie McAvoy’s injury.

The 24-year-old made the Bruins out of training camp, but has been used scarcely. He has one goal in six games.

The former first-round pick (30th overall) in the 2019 draft, has been largely used as a defensive forward at wing and center over his career. In 136 NHL games has 11 goals and 11 assists.
