Ole Miss has given Lane Kiffin an ultimatum to decide his future before the Nov. 28 Egg Bowl against Mississippi State, a person briefed on the discussions told The Athletic.
Kiffin, whose 10-1 team is off this week, is considered a candidate for open jobs at both Florida and LSU. LSU sent a private plane for Kiffin’s family to visit Baton Rouge on Monday, The Advocate reported. They took a similar trip to Gainesville the day before, according to On3.
Messages to Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter were not immediately returned.
Questions surrounding Kiffin’s future have intensified since Florida dismissed Billy Napier on Oct. 19, followed by LSU firing Brian Kelly a week later. Ole Miss fans chanted “We Want Lane” during the final minute of the Rebels’ 34-24 win over Florida on Saturday night.
The person briefed on the discussions did not say what would happen if Kiffin remains uncommitted prior to the Egg Bowl. Kiffin has repeatedly said he’s happy at Ole Miss but has not declared he is staying in Oxford.
“I love what we’re doing here,” Kiffin said after the Florida game. “Today was awesome. To even talk about it right now would be so disrespectful to our players and how well they played today. We’ve got a lot of things going here. Doing really well, and I love it here.”
The Rebels are likely to make their first College Football Playoff appearance. They were No. 7 in last week’s rankings and will likely move up one spot Tuesday following Alabama’s loss to Oklahoma. If they do not move into the top four, they would likely host a first-round game on Dec. 19 or 20.
Kiffin is 54-19 in his six seasons at Ole Miss. His four double-digit win seasons in the past five years are more than the program had produced in the previous 50 years. He is 115-53 across 14 seasons at Tennessee, USC, FAU and Ole Miss.
