Spencer Matthews has revealed that his wife, Vogue Williams, once told him to “sleep downstairs” after he experienced an issue at night. Speaking to BBC Radio 2’s Fearne Cotton on a recent episode of her mental-health themed podcast, Happy Place, Spencer opened up about the topic of sleep.

Spencer noted that he usually (and likely to the envy of many poor sleepers) enjoys around eight hours of sleep each night and is the “kind of guy” who can “sleep better” than his own children.

Yet, as Fearne described him as a “lucky sod”, Spencer proceeded to recount his own brush with insomnia four nights prior to the recording and how it led to an amusing and perhaps relatable exchange with his wife.

He said: “Get into bed and I lay down, and I’m just like…I’m like wide awake. I shut my eyes to go to sleep, normal stuff. Like, it’s almost like when I shut my eyes, like they’re still open, right?”

Spencer went on to say that you may as well “not even try”, as Fearne, who could apparently sympathise with Spencer’s nighttime dilemma, jumped in to suggest that it’s “almost more effort” to keep them closed.

He described how he tried reading a book, but to no avail. Instead he tried watching TV.

Spencer said: “It’s now like 11.30, and I’m just like, ‘What is going on?’ Like, normally, I’d be like flatlining.”

He added: “I fell asleep at four, couldn’t sleep, and I’m like tossing and turning, and going….and Vogue’s literally just like, ‘Babe, like, will you like go and sleep downstairs?’ I was just like, ‘Go and what downstairs? Sleep? That’s a thing of the past’.”

Fortunately, Spencer was eventually able to sleep at 4am but had to get up just two hours later at 6am.

He later described the experience as the “weirdest thing” that’s ever happened to him.

In other news, Spencer recently revealed in a vlog that his famous wife isn’t best pleased when he leaves things lying around their home.

Speaking on his Untapped YouTube channel, Spencer said that he may get “an earful” from Vogue, who will tell him to move the offending item and ensure that it’s “not around”, noting how it’s “cluttering the house”.

He said: “Whenever I have anything lying around the house, and I mean anything at all, it could be a package that I’ve not even seen or opened yet or had anything to do with, right? It’s by the door, I will get an earful from my wife saying, ‘What is this? Move it. Make sure that it’s not around. It’s cluttering the house.'”
