Spencer Matthews has disclosed that his wife, Vogue Williams, once instructed him to “sleep downstairs” after he encountered a problem during the night. Chatting to Fearne Cotton on a recent instalment of her mental-health focused podcast, Happy Place, Spencer opened up about the subject of sleep.

Spencer mentioned that he typically (and probably to the jealousy of many troubled sleepers) gets around eight hours of sleep each night and is the “kind of guy” who can “sleep better” than his own children.

However, as Fearne labelled him a “lucky sod”, Spencer went on to recall his own encounter with insomnia four nights before the recording and how it resulted in an amusing and perhaps familiar conversation with his wife.

He said: “Get into bed and I lay down, and I’m just like…I’m like wide awake. I shut my eyes to go to sleep, normal stuff. Like, it’s almost like when I shut my eyes, like they’re still open, right?”

Spencer continued to explain that you might as well “not even try”, as Fearne, who could clearly relate to Spencer’s nocturnal predicament, chimed in to propose that it’s “almost more effort” to keep them closed.

He outlined how he attempted reading a book, but to no success. Instead he tried watching TV. Spencer said: “It’s now like 11.30, and I’m just like, ‘What is going on?’ Like, normally, I’d be like flatlining.”

He continued: “I fell asleep at four, couldn’t sleep, and I’m like tossing and turning, and going….and Vogue’s literally just like, ‘Babe, like, will you like go and sleep downstairs?’ I was just like, ‘Go and what downstairs? Sleep? That’s a thing of the past’.”

Luckily, Spencer, who has also appeared on Celebrity MasterChef and The Jump, managed to drift off at 4am but had to rise just two hours later at 6am.

He subsequently described the ordeal as the “weirdest thing” that’s ever happened to him.

Meanwhile, Spencer has also recently disclosed in a vlog that his famous wife isn’t best pleased when he leaves belongings scattered around their residence.

He made the revelation while speaking on his Untapped YouTube channel.

Indeed, Spencer mentioned that he might receive “an earful” from Vogue, who will instruct him to relocate the offending item and ensure that it’s “not around”, highlighting how it’s “cluttering the house”.

He explained: “Whenever I have anything lying around the house, and I mean anything at all, it could be a package that I’ve not even seen or opened yet or had anything to do with, right? It’s by the door, I will get an earful from my wife saying, ‘What is this? Move it. Make sure that it’s not around. It’s cluttering the house.'”
