“Could see the fear in his eyes”: NBA Fans React to Austin Rivers’ Interview With Dad Doc in Emotional On-Air Exchange

Former NBA player Austin Rivers, now an analyst for NBC, interviewed his father, Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers, on Monday. Doc and his team were in Cleveland for a highly anticipated matchup against the Cavaliers. The Bucks, who lost to the same opponent in late October, looked to get back at the hosts.

Heading into the showdown, the younger Rivers opened his questioning by calling his father, “Doc.” The coach, brows bunched together in disbelief, asked why Austin called him that. The analyst quickly responded that it was only for the interview.

Fans reacted to the viral exchange between the Rivers:

“Lmaooo you could see the fear in his eyes when he said, “doc? That’s my name?”

Austin Rivers asked Doc Rivers about what the Bucks should do to play better. Milwaukee entered the game alternating wins and losses in its last 10 games. The Bucks flew to Cleveland after a humiliating 119-95 loss to the LA Lakers.

The elder Rivers responded:

“We gotta rebound better. We gotta foul less and we gotta get to the paint more.”

From basketball, the two quickly talked about side topics. Austin asked if his father would be excited that he would be hovering around the Bucks as a sideline reporter. Doc responded that it was nothing new for him, as he said Austin has been hovering around him his whole life.

Austin Rivers created history playing for Doc Rivers in the NBA

In mid-January 2015, the LA Clippers, coached by Doc Rivers, acquired Austin Rivers in a three-team deal involving the Boston Celtics and the Phoenix Suns. On Jan. 16 that year, the younger Rivers etched his name into NBA history when he debuted for the Clippers. He became the first son to play for his father.

Although history was made, Austin had a rough night against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He failed to score after going 0-for-4, including 0-for-2 from deep. He had one assist but also committed one turnover.

Austin Rivers would turn his game around as the season progressed. He averaged 6.8 points, 2.5 assists, 1.9 rebounds and 0.7 steals per game.

The father-son duo helped LA reach the playoffs that year, where they were bounced out by the Houston Rockets in a seven-game thriller.
