Married couple (70s) in critical condition following stabbing incident

A married couple in their 70s have been transferred to hospital in Cork following a stabbing incident at their home in Ballinlough in the city on Monday evening.

The couple are understood to be in a critical condition at Cork University Hospital.

This follows an attack outside their home in Shrewsbury Downs on the southside of the city at around 9.30pm.

A man in his 30s, who is known to the couple, was arrested at the scene.

Neighbours of the couple contacted the emergency services, having witnessed an incident outside the property.

Members of the Armed Support Unit attended the scene and managed to disarm the man.

Paramedics performed CPR on the male pensioner, and the couple were rushed to hospital for treatment.

The arrested man was taken to the Bridewell Garda Station in Cork city centre for questioning.

He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

He was due to be seen by a doctor on Monday evening, as gardaí need to ascertain whether he is medically fit to be questioned.

A full forensic examination of the scene is set to take place.
