Lan Kwai Fong public toilet named Hong Kong’s cleanest despite frequent use

Hong Kong’s nightlife district Lan Kwai Fong has been recognised for maintaining the city’s cleanest public toilet this year despite frequent use, one of two in tourist hotspots that were in the top three best restrooms.
The Hong Kong Toilet Association released its annual ranking of the city’s public bathrooms on Tuesday and called on the government to refurbish some of the older facilities, whose condition could not be improved even with regular cleaning.
This year’s survey placed the Lan Kwai Fong public toilet in the top spot, with association president Henry Hung Chi-kuen attributing its pristine state to the facility manager’s diligence in identifying unclean areas and dealing with them promptly.
“When I went there [for inspection], the man was cleaning all the time at [ …] the wash basin and kept opening the cubicle doors to see whether anything was left dirty there and flush it immediately,” Hung said. “The one who is in charge of the toilet makes a big difference.”
Kam Tin Shi public toilet in Yuen Long was named the second cleanest toilet. The government was praised for building the toilet in the remote area.
Catchick Street Garden public toilet in Western took third place. Hung also praised the facility for its cleanliness despite being in a tourist hotspot that attracts crowds of mainland Chinese visitors for its sea views.
“This public toilet is very important to [mainland tourists]. I have asked them if they were satisfied with the bathroom, and they said they were happy with it,” he said.
