School ‘chemical spill’ leaves five in hospital including three teens as police swoop on science class

The substance was isolated and rooms were ventilated by the fire service

A school was put into lockdown after five people – including three teenagers – were taken to hospital following a ‘chemical spill’. Emergency services were called to Biddulph High School in Biddulph, Staffordshire, this morning (November 18).

Fire crews arrived at the school grounds on Conway Road, Knypersley, at around 10.35am. Police and paramedics were also called and the affected building was quickly ventilated. It is not known what chemical was involved.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 10.35am today (Tuesday 18 November) to Conway Road, Knypersley, following reports of a chemical spill Three appliances attended the scene alongside colleagues from Staffordshire Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service.

“The chemical was isolated, and the building was ventilated. Five people were taken to the hospital by paramedics for precautionary checks.”

Biddulph High School told StokeonTrentLive “an issue was identified with a piece of science equipment,” and that “following our normal processes and procedures, emergency services attended…[and] have confirmed the site is safe for normal operations to continue.

The school added: “We are grateful for the swift and professional response of our staff and students and the support provided by the emergency services. The wellbeing and safety of our students and staff remain our highest priority.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service added: “We were called to Biddulph High School, Conway Road, Knypersley at 10.15am. Two paramedic officers, an ambulance and HART paramedics responded to the scene.

“Crews arrived to find six patients requiring assessment after being exposed to a chemical substance.

“A man, a woman and three teenagers were treated on scene before being conveyed to Royal Stoke University Hospital for further precautionary checks. The sixth patient was discharged on scene.”
