Dr. King Davis appointed as Killeen ISD’s permanent superintendent

KILLEEN, Texas — Dr. King Davis has officially taken the helm as Killeen Independent School District (KISD)’s permanent superintendent, signing his contract Monday night. His appointment follows an interim tenure that began on August 11, during which he confronted significant challenges facing the district.
Throughout his time as interim leader, Davis tackled issues such as the looming possibility of state intervention and potential closures of three school campuses. These pressing concerns underscored the urgent need for strong leadership, which district officials believe Davis has demonstrated effectively.
Davis’s track record was a crucial factor in his selection for the permanent role. Prior to his time in Killeen, he served at Sheldon Independent School District, where he successfully resolved an $11 million budget deficit within just one year. His strategic initiatives not only stabilized the district’s finances but also improved its Texas Education Agency (TEA) accountability rating from “improvement required” to a commendable B grade.
Board President Brett Williams lauded Davis for his contributions, noting that the improvements extended beyond the school district and positively impacted the broader Killeen community. “I don’t think we just improved Killeen ISD… I think we improved the City of Killeen,” Williams remarked, emphasizing the significance of Davis’s leadership.

During the contract signing, Davis expressed his commitment to the district and its students. “I will give you my best every single day and I know it’s a tough road ahead,” he stated, recognizing the collaborative effort needed to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. He reinforced the importance of providing quality education to the children, remarking, “We truly give children the opportunity in their lives by way of a powerful educator.”
With a wealth of experience in various Texas school districts, Davis is poised to lead Killeen ISD through its current obstacles. His focus will be not only on maintaining fiscal stability but also on enhancing educational outcomes across the district as he embarks on this new chapter as its permanent leader.
