Volunteer from Kramatorsk Nadiya Kalinchenkova wins the “Award of Memory of Nations”

Ukrainian volunteer Nadiya Kalinchenkova from Kramatorsk became a laureate of the “Award of Memory of Nations,” which annually honors people whose lives are examples of honor, freedom, and human dignity.

The award ceremony took place at the National Theater in Prague.

After Kramatorsk was liberated from Russian occupiers in 2014, Nadiya Kalinchenkova helped displaced persons from the captured cities and then joined volunteers who were assisting the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

At the volunteer center where Ms. Nadiya worked, they not only made camouflage nets and kikimori for the military, but also prepared treats for them, knitted socks, and sewed special underwear for hospitals.

When the full-scale war began, the volunteer center in Kramatorsk worked seven days a week. The number of orders from the military for camouflage nets increased significantly, and the craftswomen worked for several months without days off. Now, due to the front line approaching the city, Ms. Nadiya has moved to Poltava and continues her volunteer work there.

The Memory of Nations Award is a project of the Czech non-governmental organization Post Bellum in cooperation with public broadcasters in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Ukraine. It is awarded annually to participants in the oral history project Memory of Nations, which collects eyewitness accounts of significant historical events.

This is the fourth time Ukrainians have received this award. In 2022, the winner was Myroslav Marynovych, a public figure, founding member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, dissident, and political prisoner during the Soviet era. In 2023, it was Ukrainian priest, chaplain, and recipient of the Order of Merit, Third Class, Vasyl Vyrozub. In 2024, it was dissident Olga Heyko, who became the first woman to receive this award.
