Gas-led rescue of Whyalla steelworks may cost taxpayers extra $2b

Taxpayers could be on the hook for up to $2 billion in extra subsidies for gas supply and infrastructure should the BlueScope consortium buy the ailing Whyalla steelworks, analysis by Climate Energy Finance has found.

The organisation says oil and gas giant Santos would likely be paid subsidies to supply gas while public funding would also be needed for a 160km pipeline expansion to transport gas, with the overall cost of taxpayer funding likely to reach between $1.7 billion to $2 billion over the next 10 years.
