AFL Draft: Fremantle secure Essendon Next Generation Academy prospect Adam Sweid with first selection

Fremantle have swooped on Essendon Next Generation Academy prospect Adam Sweid with the final pick of the first round of the 2025 AFL draft after the Bombers opted not to match their bid.
As their cross-town rivals West Coast had done four times earlier in the night, Fremantle opted to bid on an academy prospect with their first selection — but unlike the Eagles, their attempt was successful.
After taking WA product Jacob Farrow with pick 10 earlier in the night, the Bombers chose to let midfielder-forward Sweid head to the Dockers at pick 25.
Sweid has played much of his football to date as a midfielder but has some offensive flair and could start his AFL career across half-forward.

He suffered a torn ACL aged 16 but bounced back strongly to produce a strong campaign for Calder Cannons in the Coates Talent League last season.
His impressive form in Victoria’s underage competition saw him earn a debut for the Bombers’ reserve side in the VFL in June, in which he kicked a goal.

The draft saw the Dockers continue a recent trend of taking a Victorian with their top selection, coming on the back of Rising Star winner Murphy Reid with pick 17 last year and forward-turned-defender Cooper Simpson with the 35th selection in 2023.
