Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s new mega evolution won’t be easy to get, Game Freak warns

Meet Mega Zeraora. Looks pretty cool, right? Before you get too excited, though, you might want to start beefing up your Pokémon Legends: Z-A team. The thunder beast is a part of the Mega Dimension DLC, a portion of the game which will be a way tougher challenge than the base experience.

As fans who have been following the downloadable content know, Mega Dimension will introduce the concept of monsters who can go well over level 100. As of this writing, we don’t yet know what the level cap will be. Trailers have shown Pokémon reaching up to level 164, but presumably Game Freak will settle on a rounded number, like 165 or perhaps even 200. Whatever the case, players will be able to briefly bolster their creatures through donuts that grant them levels for a set period of time. The design makes Mega Dimension almost seem like Pokémon’s take on a roguelike in that players will have to route carefully — and death might pose a bigger setback than it normally would.

So in order to get Mega Zeraora, you’re going to have to spend $29.99 for the DLC and survive what might be Pokémon’s toughest challenge in the series to date. Or at least, that’s what the marketing around Mega Zeraora is sounding like. “It looks like getting Mega Zeraora for your team will be a little difficult,” warns the YouTube trailer description.

Here’s the official description:

The electric energy it stores in its body is equivalent to ten bolts of lightning. Protrusions on its forehead, chest, back, and the backs of its hands are where the electric energy is particularly concentrated. The protrusions steadily emit a pale blue light.

Zeraora is the latest Mega locked behind specific constraints, like the starter stones that can only be attained by playing Pokémon Legends‘ Ranked mode. While this prerequisite bothered fans who don’t want to pay for an online subscription just to top off their Pokédex, Game Freak did at least recently ease how far you need to progress in Ranked to be eligible for the stones. The company also finally made the long-lost mythical Diancie and its new Mega Stone available for everyone via Mystery Gift.

The good news is that you have until Dec. 10 to prepare. The DLC also comes with a number of other goodies, like Mega Raichu X and Y as well as Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur. If you pre-order, you’ll get a code to unlock 12 Pokeballs as a part of the Luxurious Poke Ball set. There’s also a set of new clothes to mark the occasion.
