Women’s Champions League predictions
Manchester United have made an excellent start to the league phase of the Women’s Champions League, but they have had a couple of domestic wobbles which could make them vulnerable for their trip to Wolfsburg.
The Red Devils have taken games against Valerenga, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in their stride, but this looks set to be their toughest test yet following recent league defeats to Aston Villa and Manchester City.
Wolfsburg will feel they have a point to prove after they were beaten 3-1 in their most recent continental outing against Lyon, and they will be looking to build upon league results that have seen them lose two of their ten outings to leave them six points behind Bayern Munich.
However, 34 goals in those matches is an impressive tally and they are still able to call upon veteran striker Alexandra Popp, who has demonstrated she is far from finished at 34, having scored six goals in the league this term.
United have posted an expected-goals (xG) mark of more than 1.0 in just one of their last five matches and there looks a strong chance that their hosts will have much more in the final third to come out on top.
Arsenal remain inconsistent
Defending champions Arsenal are another team who have a bit to prove and there are no guarantees that they will be able to bounce back from a defeat to Bayern in their last game when they host Real Madrid.
Las Blancas have to pick themselves up following a 4-0 defeat to Barcelona at the weekend, but they could cause problems for the Gunners, who got the better of Barca in last season’s final in Lisbon.
Arsenal have struggled with inconsistency for much of the season and while a draw with WSL champions Chelsea is a creditable result, the fact they saw a two-goal lead disappear in their loss to Bayern will have left plenty of scars.
They would have expected to beat north London rivals Tottenham with a bit to spare on Sunday, but they had to be content with a goalless draw, and they have also been beaten in the Champions League by Lyon, so it is difficult to have a great deal of faith in Renee Slegers’ side.
The Barca loss ended a run in which Real won five league games on the bounce and they had conceded just once in their preceding seven La Liga Femenina matches, so they are worth backing in the draw-double-chance market.
