Mary Berry’s quiet life in posh village where house prices are £790k

With a career spanning over six decades, Mary Berry has published more than 75 books, including her most recent, Mary 90: My Very Best Recipes. She has appeared as a judge on The Great British Bake Off and hosted a variety of her own shows. Her cookbooks and celebrity status have helped her amass a $25million (£18.9million) fortune, according to CelebrityNetWorth.

This has allowed the chef and baker to live in some of the most exclusive areas in the UK, including Penn, a small village in Buckinghamshire. Mary lived in the Grade II-listed home for over 30 years, and it was where she filmed several of her cooking shows.

However, the baker is now reportedly residing in Henley-on-Thames, after they sold their Penn home in 2018.

Henley-on-Thames is a town on the edge of the River Thames in south Oxfordshire, nine miles from Reading. Residents can enjoy a wonderful stretch of the river, featuring independent shops, pubs, and cafes.

The town is continuously named as one of the most beautiful towns and has previously been voted one of the best places to live in the English countryside by The Times and The Telegraph.

However, buying in the town isn’t easy, with the average house price currently standing at £789,660 over the past year, according to Rightmove.

The majority of sales during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £674,001. Semi-detached homes sold for an average of £778,661, while detached properties fetched an average of £1,179,016.

Overall, the historical sold prices in Henley over the last year were 2% higher than the previous year and 7% higher than the 2022 peak of £741,069.

There is a range of homes in the area, with 189 currently listed for sale at the time of writing. The most expensive is currently on sale for a whopping £5,950,000, but there is also a range of flats, terraced and semi-detached homes for sale.

Many famous people, including Mary Berry, have also previously chosen the area to settle down. George Clooney is thought to have ties to Sonning, a charming nearby village.
