Coronation Street viewers have been left feeling devastated as Todd Grimshaw is subjected to more abuse and consequently quits his beloved job.

As fans of the ITV soap will know, scaffolder Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) has been horrible to his boyfriend, Todd (Gareth Pierce), throughout their relationship, but he took things even further during Monday’s episode (November 17).

Since the couple began dating, Theo has been emotionally and physically abusing Todd by putting him down, gaslighting him, humiliating him, and even going so far as pouring milk over his head and forcing him to eat food.

On Friday (November 14), Todd and George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) spent the day preparing for an important funeral, before winding down over a pint in the Rovers.

George was adamant that Todd was at work bright and early the next day for the funeral, and Todd promised that he would only have one more drink, though Theo had other ideas.

After secretly ordering Todd a double, Theo ended up carrying him home and letting him fall asleep on the sofa, and sabotaged his work gear.

On Monday, Theo deliberately put all of Todd’s white shirts in the washing machine so he’d have nothing to wear to conduct the important funeral.

Meanwhile, George was horrified when Todd didn’t appear, and sent Christina Midgeley (Amy Robbins) over to look for him.

Todd rushed to get himself ready for the service and found that his phone hadn’t charged, meaning that his alarm hadn’t gone off.

As he continued to panic, Theo acted as though he hadn’t interfered by deliberately washing Todd’s shirts and getting him drunk, making Todd believe that it was all on him.

By the time he arrived at work, George was furious, and the fact that he was wearing a stained blue shirt only further angered the boss.

When George told Todd he was standing him down and Christina would be taking his place at the funeral, the undertaker was disappointed.

Later, when George and Christina returned from the service, Todd and George got into a blazing row, which ultimately led to Todd being thrown out.

Not finished with his meddling, Theo decided to call George round later so that he and Todd could settle their argument.

Though George attempted to apologise, Todd was still so angry at having been disrespected that he announced he was quitting his job, before screaming at George to leave.

Theo then continued to verbally abuse Todd and left him on the sofa to cry alone, leaving Corrie viewers heartbroken at the abusive scene.

Taking to X, one viewer wrote: “This broke my heart. As a viewer, I felt it was just as bad to watch (as physical abuse).”

A second stated: “Hard to watch, but both actors are doing an amazing job with this storyline. Poor George, too.”

A third chimed in: “What a scene between them (crying face)”, as another added: “Such an awful pattern of abuse & it’s heartbreaking to watch.”

“Theo has successfully broken our Todd. That end scene was utterly heartbreaking”, explained one viewer.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV and ITVX
