Coronation Street confirms Roy Cropper’s new secret tonight – and fans will be worried

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

In tonight’s (19 November) episode of Coronation Street, fans will finally learn Roy Cropper’s secret. Already available to stream on ITVX and YouTube, the latest instalment includes a surprising moment between Nina Lucas and Roy.

After noting his strange obsession with the post, Nina asks if anything is going on with Roy. “I have enrolled in a scheme to exchange correspondence with people who are in prison,” the Corrie favourite replies.

“Having been in prison myself, I know how isolating that is, and a scheme like this could be a lifeline to people with few friends and family.”

Roy adds that he is currently writing to three prisoners and refuses to give Nina any specific details. “I’d rather not betray any confidences,” he says, before heading to the post box.

For the time being, Roy’s decision to write to prisoners appears to be harmless, but this is Coronation Street we’re talking about, and nothing is ever as it seems. As he continues to bond with his mysterious pen pals, who knows, perhaps there will be some unforeseen consequences for Roy. Has he bitten off more than he can chew?

While the identities of Roy’s pen pals remain unknown, fans have naturally begun to speculate online. According to the Daily Star, several have surmised that he may be writing to Corrie legend, Becky McDonald, previously portrayed by Katherine Kelly. Sharing their theories on a Coronation Street Facebook page, one wrote, “Could it be Becky McDonald?” while another chimed in, writing: “Good idea, she might be in prison since leaving.”

As fans will remember, Becky was written out of the soap in January 2012, with the character leaving Weatherfield and moving to Barbados with her then-boyfriend, Danny Stratton. More recently, it was revealed in February 2025 that she had embarked on a new life with a new man named Ian.

During a phone call with Shona, David Platt assured his wife that Becky could take in her nephew Max if needed. “Becky said she’ll have Max,” he noted. “Apparently, she’s still shacked up with that Ian bloke, who runs the hotel in Belize. He’s never been one for staying on the right side of the law. Max can go and work for him, cash in hand.”

Who knows, maybe Becky has fallen on hard times. Looks like we’ll have to wait and see who Roy’s been corresponding with.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
