Major blow to Aus after summit bid fails

COP31 will not be hosted in Adelaide next year after Australia conceded to rival bidder Turkey.

Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said on Thursday talks for a COP31 “held in Turkey” but with him “appointed COP President for Negotiations” were ongoing.

He said they were thrashing out details for a “pre-COP is hosted in the Pacific” as well as a “pledging event for the Pacific Resilience Fund, which is so important to us”.

“Obviously, it would be great if Australia could have it all, but we can’t have it all,” Mr Bowen told reporters from the COP30 Summit in Brazil.

“This process works on consensus.”

More to come.
