How Vince Gill & His Wife Have Leaned On Each Other Through Illness

Country music legend Vince Gill has been a constant source of support and stability for his wife, Christian-pop icon Amy Grant, through a series of serious health challenges that began in 2020.
In a candid PEOPLE interview from November 2024, Gill described how their journey has been marked by uncertainty, recovery and deep devotion.
The Two Have Gone Through a Series of Medical Issues
The couple’s ordeal began when Grant was diagnosed with a rare congenital heart condition — partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) — after Gill went in for his own health check.
She underwent open-heart surgery in mid-2020, a moment Gill recalls with both relief and tenderness.
He remembered visiting her in recovery. “She was still out from anesthesia, and I saw her, and it was just the most beautiful, peaceful thing on her face,” he recalled, and knew that she was going to be okay.
Their health battles didn’t stop there.
In 2022, Grant suffered a serious bike accident that left her unconscious and later hospitalized with a brain injury.
Grant Praises Gill For Being There for Her
She publicly shared how difficult her recovery was, admitting she worried she might not fully recover.
But Gill stayed by her side, canceling shows — and even writing a song for his wife as she recovered from the bike injury.
At one concert, he introduced their daughter Corrina to sing a touching rendition of his song, “When My Amy Prays.”
Grant shared with PEOPLE in January 2023 how much Gill supported her during this difficult time.
She revealed Gill had touching words when she was struggling. “And he said, ‘Things happen to people every day, and you just have to take one day at a time, and we’re here, and I love you.’”
She added, “And that just kind of made every day of the journey okay.”
Grant’s health challenges continued when she required throat surgery to remove a cyst, forcing her to relearn how to sing — a deeply personal setback for someone whose voice is her life’s work.
Throughout everything, Gill previously told PEOPLE how Grant faced all of her challenges with “kindness and grace.”
The two have been married for over 25 years and continue to support one another. They tied the knot in 2000 and share one daughter together, Corrina Grant Gill.
Gill is set to receive the 2025 CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award on Wednesday, Nov. 19.
