Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin’s wife Nastasiya celebrated her 32nd birthday this weekend with an intimate family gathering in Istanbul. She later shared a series of Instagram stories featuring a close look at the celebration.
Nastasiya spent the evening with her father Russian film producer Kirill Shubsky and a small circle of friends. One of her first stories showed a waterfront hotel suite overlooking the Istanbul skyline. A brass telescope stood beside a marble coffee table.
She also shared a short birthday skit filmed in the hotel room where she held large silver “3” and “2” balloons while posing and laughing for the camera. The night continued over dinner where she filmed her father smiling as friends gathered around the table.

A birthday cake topped with candles was brought out while the group sang to her followed by a toast as glasses of red wine clinked around the room. She also reshared friends’ birthday tributes including a black-and-white photo with the message in Russian:
“С днём рождения, моя дорогая! Люблю” (“Happy birthday, my dear! Love you”).

Nastasiya and Alex Ovechkin first met at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but reconnected years later on Instagram. They eventually got engaged in 2015 and married in Moscow the next year. The couple share two sons, Sergei and Ilya.
Alex Ovechkin’s wife shares pregame meal she prepared for Capitals
Earlier this month, Alex Ovechkin scored his 900th NHL goal during the Washington Capitals’ 6-1 win over the St. Louis Blues. Following the game, his wife, Nastasiya shared a lighthearted Instagram story featuring a pregame meal she made for the team.
She posted a photo of the traditional borscht she had prepared for the Capitals squad joking that cooking the soup before games might need to become a new routine.
“It seems like making borscht before the game for the whole team will become a must,” Nastya wrote followed by a laugh emoji.
The moment played into a running team joke that has been going around for some time. Earlier this year, while speaking with Sport-Express reporter Igor Rabiner Nastya explained that she had cooked large pots of borscht for the Capitals a couple of seasons ago just before the team earned an 8-1 win over the Blues in November 2024.
“There was a case when a couple of years ago I cooked huge pots of borscht – and the team, having eaten it, won 8-1. In any case, the score was incredible. They laughed that it was my ‘fault.’ Since then, such requests sometimes happen.”
Players teased that the lopsided victory was her “fault” and the lighthearted superstition has lingered ever since.
“So sometimes Sasha asks to make borscht for the team,” Nastya said.
She also added that preparing the soup in such large quantities naturally takes longer. Borscht, made primarily from beets and vegetables, is known for being time-intensive even in regular portions.
