Suspect In Crash That Killed Dana Point Teen Was On Probation For DUI, Police Say

DANA POINT, CA — A 59-year-old Orange County man arrested on suspicion of hitting and killing a 13-year-old boy with his pickup truck had two prior arrests for driving under the influence and was on probation for one of them, authorities said.

San Juan Capistrano resident Bradley Gene Funk was found by witnesses just two to three miles away from the scene of the crash and taken into custody by deputies, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash was reported just after 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19 near Park Lantern and Dana Point Harbor Drive.

The boy, identified as Luis Adrian Morales-Pacheco of San Juan Capistrano, was walking with his brother to school and died at a nearby hospital, officials said.

Funk’s allegedly struck the curb and hit the sixth-grader before fleeing the scene, OCSD Sgt. Lizbeth Gwisdalla told The Orange County Register. When his truck was found, it was missing a tire.

According to court records, Funk had two previous DUI convictions stemming from cases filed two months apart — in Nov. 2020 and Jan. 2021. He was presently serving a five-year probation sentence when he was arrested Tuesday.

Funk was arrested on suspicion of murder, hit-and-run driving and driving under the influence, authorities said.
