Students and parents from one of Brisbane’s most esteemed girls’ schools have expressed outrage and sadness following the leak of a sensitive document containing personal notes about students. The document, compiled by teachers at Somerville House, included detailed observations regarding students’ personalities, medical conditions, physical appearances, and even their parents’ marital statuses, creating a significant controversy within the school community.
The notes were reportedly created when the students were in year seven, back in 2021. They encompassed a range of comments, including remarks about individual students’ hair conditions, their popularity among peers, and their behavior in classroom settings. Disturbingly, some students were described with terms like “odd” or “rude.” The document also detailed how students handled various subjects and assessments, along with specifics about their medical conditions and treatments, including documentation of the type of medical care and medications.

The situation worsened when students reportedly accessed the document inadvertently while searching for files in Microsoft Teams, leading to further distress as some were able to read what should have remained private.
Principal Sandra Hastie contacted parents to inform them of the “data breach” within the school’s IT system, though she refrained from offering an apology. In her message, she acknowledged the issue, indicating that “some students have been able to access and read private historical notes as a result of the data breach,” and described the comments within as falling short of the school’s standards and values. She also assured parents that the school was investigating the incident and would fulfill its legal obligations regarding the breach.
