Netflix’s top-rated comedy A Man on the Inside has returned for a second season today (November 20), with Ted Danson reprising his role as loveable retiree-turned-detective, Charles Nieuwendyk.

While season one saw Charles go undercover to investigate theft at a nursing home, the second series will see him pose as a college professor in order to attempt to crack a blackmail case. A cast of new faces join the Mike Schur-created series this time around, including New Girl’s Max Greenfield and award-winning actress, Mary Steenburgen.

Netflix’s synopsis teases: “Eager to take on another big undercover case, Charles gets his chance when a mysterious blackmailer targets Wheeler College president Jack Berenger (Max Greenfield), who enlists Charles to go undercover as a professor.

“Charles finds no shortage of possible suspects, but his attention gets diverted by free-spirited music teacher Mona (Mary Steenburgen), whose zest for life awakens feelings he thought he’d buried after the passing of his wife. Is he ready to open his heart again at this stage in his life? And more importantly, has he fallen for the very criminal he’s been sent to unmask?”

The show is loosely inspired by the true story of an 83-year-old man who went undercover in a Chilean nursing home to try and find evidence of abuse. The incredible real-life events were documented in Oscar-nominated documentary film, The Mole Agent.

Viewers who loved A Man on the Inside – a show described as a “warm hug” by fans – may be looking for something similar to watch next. Luckily creator Mike Schur has a host of similar sitcoms with multiple seasons for fans to add to their watchlists.

The Good Place

Ted Danson stars alongside Kristen Bell, William Harper, Manny Jacinto and Jameela Jamil in a light-hearted tale all about the afterlife – specifically heaven and hell – and its quirks.

It centres around the moody and entitled Eleanor Shellstrop who, after a freak accident, finds herself in heaven a.k.a The Good Place. While she’s initially relieved about her prospects, she soon realises there has been a mistake.

Its four seasons are made up of 22-minute long episodes on average – the perfect bingeable length. It also boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score, with 97 per cent from critics and a 90 per cent rating from audiences.

Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation boasts a cast of comedy greats

Now considered one of the great modern sitcoms, Parks and Recreation boasts a glittering cast that includes Amy Poehler, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza and Chris Pratt to name but a few.

The show centres around the goings-on at the Indiana Parks and Recreation Department, kicking off with midlevel bureaucrat Leslie Knope’s efforts to improve her local town in the face of red tape and unhelpful colleagues.

Critics gave the series a 93 per cent Rotten Tomatoes score on average with audiences slightly lower at 89 per cent. One reviewer called the series “better than the Office”, though its more recent seasons have come under slightly more scrutiny.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows a loveable squad of detectives

Saturday Night Live alum Andy Samberg leads the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine which follows the lives and caseloads of the detectives working at Brooklyn’s 99th Precinct.

The late Andre Braugher portrays sharp-as-nails Captain Ray Holt who oversees the blunders and triumphs of his haphazard squad, which also includes Melissa Fumero as try-hard Amy Santiago and Stephanie Beatriz as no-nonsense detective, Rosa Diaz.

Viewers awarded the show a respectable 88 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics offered up a much more generous 95 per cent.

Rutherford Falls

Fans said Rutherford Falls was “cancelled too soon” with the series – which ran for two seasons – following a pair of lifelong friends who have their relationship tested when a crisis hits their small town. It stars The Hangover’s Ed Helms and Native American comedian Jana Schmieding.

“This show was super cosy and I just loved it. I’m pretty mad at Peacock because it’s cancelled so fast,” one disgruntled fan penned, as another gushed: “It was a solid show. Not AMAZING, but it was good, and it wasn’t afraid to confront the challenges of ‘American history’ in a predominantly Native American landscape, which made for good television.”

It currently sits at a 96 per cent Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and a surprisingly low 61 per cent from audiences.
