Shinigami Hime to Ishokan no Kaibutsu heading to Switch and Switch 2

Nippon Ichi Software has announced Shinigami Hime to Ishokan no Kaibutsu for Switch and Switch 2, and it’s set to release in Japan on April 30th, 2026. There’s no word on a localization at this time.
Shinigami Hime to Ishokan no Kaibutsu is the latest entry in the “picture book” series by Nippon Ichi Software that explores the interactions between humans and monsters, following The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince and The Cruel King and the Great Hero. As with the previous titles, the character design and worldview are handled by Sayaka Oda, with Kento Jobana (known for his work on Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless, Bar Stella Abyss, etc.) responsible for the scenario.
This game tells a story of heart-to-heart connections and salvation surrounding Mono, a girl who visits the medical facility “Ishokan” in hopes of saving her older sister, who has been afflicted by the terrifying “Shinigami Disease”; Melhendia, a goat-like creature who seeks to exploit her; and the girls who the disease have transformed into strange creatures.
The picture book-like expressions with analog illustrations that have defined the series return, while the deliberate use of monochrome fields sets it apart from previous titles, creating a world that is eerie and strange, yet still somehow beautiful.
Players will be able to interact with the world of the picture book, “destroying” or “transforming” it, offering a fresh and unique gameplay experience.
■ Story
The protagonist, a young girl named Mono, is a lonely girl who was abandoned by her parents despite being the descendant of famous opera singers. She lives quietly in the attic of the theater while being worked like a servant day after day.
Until recently, her beloved older sister would always visit her room and teach her opera and dance, but… now she has gone missing.
One day, Mono discovers the whereabouts of her sister.
Her sister is at “Ishokan,” an isolation facility for those afflicted by the “Shinigami Disease” epidemic.
Shinigami Disease is a terrifying illness that turns living beings into picture books, which then “emerge” into monsters, and the nation has given up on finding a cure.
“My sister is gonna turn into a monster… No way! I don’t want that!”
Unable to sit back and do nothing, Mono visits Ishokan.
In order to explore the monster-filled Ishokan and the “World of Trauma” that unfolds within the picture books the girls mutated into, Mono forms a contract with the legendary monster Mel.
“Please protect me, Mel.”
“Yahaha… I’ll protect you. Let’s get along well, human.”
Even knowing that Mel is plotting revenge against humans, Mono is determined to save the only family who has ever loved her…
■ Characters
Mono Brightman (voiced by Rena Motomura)
A lonely girl who lives in the attic of an opera theater. Treated coldly by her parents, who were famous opera singers, she handles odd jobs around the theater while living in a small attic room.
While she lacks self-confidence and has a timid personality, she hopes to become a kind person like her older sister, and when she sees someone injured, she cannot help but help them—even if they are monsters.
Melhendia (voiced by Makoto Koichi)
Nickname: Mel. A legendary monster, infamous even among the creatures of Ishokan. Cursed with a collar for the crime of harming a human, he was confined to a room in Ishokan. He wields a power called “Papereater,” which allows him to grow stronger by consuming other monsters and those born of Shinigami Disease. To regain his former strength and free himself from the curse, he seeks Mono’s cooperation.
A sarcastic creature who despises humans, he constantly clashes with the good-natured Mono.
Birdler (voiced by Mayumi Shintani)
A bird monster who was saved by Mono and Mel after becoming increasingly grotesque and violent. He loves talking to humans, calls himself Mono’s “butler,” and supports her on her adventures with his vast knowledge.
Anciel Brightman (voiced by Reina Kondou)
Mono’s older sister, who, unlike Mono, had been active as an opera singer from a young age and was regarded as having a promising future. She was the only family member who treated Mono kindly, remaining a steady source of emotional support for her. When her chronic illness worsened, she contracted Shinigami Disease and was taken to Ishokan.
■ A Game Set Inside a Picture Book: An Evolved “Playable Picture Book”
Shinigami Hime to Ishokan no Kaibutsu is an adventure game where you gather various items scattered throughout each stage.
The game is set in Ishokan, a facility for patients afflicted with Shinigami Disease, and the “worlds inside picture books” that are isolated in various places throughout Ishokan.
While searching for her older sister, who was turned into a picture book due to Shinigami Disease, Mono and her companions come across the picture books of various other girls. They then set off on an adventure through these picture-book worlds to uncover the cause of the girls’ transformations and return them to human form.
Inside each picture book lies an eerie monochrome world that embodies the trauma of each girl. Solve its various gimmicks to progress.
—Ishokan is a place where various monsters have settled, serving as the base for Mono and her companions.
—To save the girls suffering from trauma, Mono and her companions travel through the worlds of various picture books.
—As you progress through a picture book’s world, you will obtain “Memory Bookmarks” that record the girls’ traumas. By learning their stories and defeating the “Shinigami Princess” lurking at the end of each stage, you can save the girls who have become Shinigami Princesses.
—The stories of the girls who have been turned into picture books are told in a picture book style, accompanied by illustrations and narration by Sayaka Oda.
■ Interfering with the Worlds of Picture Books: Papereater
In this game, you can “interfere” with the monochrome worlds inside picture books.
Mono’s companion Mel can eat and “destroy” the monochrome worlds created by the Shinigami Disease.
Not only can he devour the paper monsters standing in your way, but also the rocks and trees blocking your path, dead ends, and even messages sent by monsters!? Anything depicted in monochrome can be eaten and destroyed.
—Chomp through the obstacles blocking your way! You can even carve out new paths by eating them!
—Even suspicious messages can be chomped away if they’re monochrome! Destroying them might just reveal a new route…!
—Only Mel can eat the picture book worlds. Instruct him as you proceed through each world.
Eat Too Much and Mel Will Go on a Rampage
Using Papereater causes changes in Mel. The more he eats, the more power he regains—and the more ferocious he becomes.
—If he eats too much, Mel will undergo a dramatic transformation.
—A giant Mel can chomp down even massive monsters with ease.
The stronger Mel’s power grows, the larger the area he can consume. However, if he becomes too ferocious, he’ll lose control and may become unable to move to other areas, putting Mono in danger.
You’ll need to decide carefully what Mel should eat so that he doesn’t go berserk.
—If Mel grows too big and too ferocious, he’ll start ignoring Mono’s instructions…!
■ Interfering with the Worlds of Picture Books: Turn Over
As you progress through your adventure, you will acquire various skills beyond eating and destroying. One of these is Mono’s skill “Turn Over,” which allows her to manipulate the colored parts of the world that Mel cannot eat.
—When you Turn Over a spot where the page is slightly lifted…
—Part of the background will flip open with a whap! revealing hidden passageways and items!
—You can even slip into the shadows behind a turned-over background to evade giant monsters.
By Turning Over parts of the world, you can uncover new paths hidden on the other side—or use the flipped background to hide from enemies. There are many ways to interact with picture-book worlds beyond simply “eating and destroying.”
■ At The End of Each Stage, You Will Fight a Completely Changed Girl…
As you progress deeper through each stage, gathering “Memory Bookmarks” that tell the girls’ story, you will encounter a girl transformed by her trauma into a “Shinigami Princess.” Defeat the Shinigami Princess and free the girl from her trauma.
■ The First Stage’s Shinigami Princess
Shepherdess Girl / Ookami Princess (voiced by Tsunomaki Watame)
A girl who has transformed into a giant, sheep-like monster known as the “Ookami Princess.”
Born as the eldest daughter of a shepherding family, she is a hardworking girl devoted to her family. Though poor, she worked diligently and lived a happy life.
Her flaw is that she pushes herself too hard.
One day, in the brief moment she took her eyes off her little sister, the girl disappeared…
“Koyou no Mori” is the world that embodies the shepherdess girl’s trauma.
Eerie, lifelike trees fill the dense forest, where man-eating wolves wander.
■ When You Save a Girl, The World Vibrantly Changes
When you defeat a Shinigami Princess, the girl overcomes her trauma, and her once-monochrome world blossoms with beautiful color. It is proof that her heart has been healed, and that she can finally move forward.
